As voice interfaces expand to more and more form factors, including wearables, home automation solutions, and entertainment platforms, designers and developers are at the forefront of complex decisions about how these experiences will work and what technologies to integrate. Those decisions will determine how users will interact with, be supported by, and ultimately perceive the systems. Tim Lynch and Tanya Kraljic will share their thinking on the fundamentals of designing voice interfaces for emerging technologies...

Although physical interaction with the world is at the core of human experience, few computer and machine interfaces provide the user with high-fidelity touch feedback, limiting their usability. Dr. Kuchenbecker's long-term research goal is to leverage scientific knowledge about the sense of touch to engineer haptic interfaces that increase the range and quality of tasks humans can accomplish. This talk will describe three of the Penn Haptics Group's (UPenn) main research thrusts: haptic texture rendering, touch feedback for robotic surgery, and motion guidance for rehabilitation. Our work...

With a $19B WhatsApp acquisition by Facebook, and multi-billion dollar valuations for other large competitors, mobile messaging apps are hot. Despite the crowded nature of the space, the user experience of messaging has evolved slowly. Traditionally, technologies such as speech recognition, predictive text, speech output and gestures have been attempted for the most part by device manufacturers, not messaging app developers - since conventional wisdom is that messaging apps should primarily focus on user-base. As competitors seek to differentiate, new, clever uses of multimodal technology...
